The Time Machine (2002)
While the 1960 version of The Time Machine remains a science fiction classic, this adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel benefits from a dazzling CGI facelift. Digital wizardry shows us the awesome splendor of eons passing in an eye blink, while Wells’s heroic time traveler–played with appealing conviction by Memento’s Guy Pearce–is given a stronger motivation for piloting his time machine 800,000 years into the future. Long after New York City has crumbled and the moon shattered by a nuclear accident, Pearce finds a new home with the peacefully primitive Eloi, after confronting the subterranean Morlocks (courtesy of Stan Winson’s monster shop) and their evil overlord (Jeremy Irons in wicked, pigmentless makeup). Trading Wells’s social commentary for pure adventure, director Simon Wells (the author’s great-grandson) maintains the story’s legacy of wonder, despite a few hokey embellishments. Catering to a younger audience, this Time Machine is fun without being particularly distinguished–a treat for the eyes, if not the brain. –Jeff Shannon
The Tuxedo
Jackie Chan looks spiffy in The Tuxedo, but the movie needs a tailor. No Jackie Chan movie could be a total misfire, however, and he’s charmingly self-effacing here as a hapless chauffeur who inadvertently replaces his injured super-agent boss (Jason Issacs) and foils a madman (Ritchie Coster) who plans to infect the world’s water supply (!) and reap a fortune selling pure bottled water. Jackie’s a bumbling superhero after donning his boss’s high-tech, Inspector Gadget-like tuxedo (it even has a “Mambo” setting), and curvaceous co-agent Jennifer Love Hewitt coaches him in crime fighting while closing in on the bad guys. It’s all as routinely ridiculous as it sounds–Jackie’s faux James Brown act is the only real highlight–and as critic Roger Ebert observed, the climax hinges on an insect queen that doesn’t exist in nature! So, while Jackie and Jennifer provide a few moments of stellar stunts and random amusement, you can blame this mess on screenwriters who didn’t do their homework. –Jeff Shannon

It put then-unknown director Kathryn Bigelow on Hollywood’s radar and gave choice roles to Aliens costars favored by Bigelow’s ex-husband James Cameron: Lance Henriksen is the leader of a makeshift family of renegade bloodsuckers, nocturnally seeking victims in rural Oklahoma; his immortal gal pal is Aliens and Terminator 2 alumnus Jenette Goldstein; and Bill Paxton is the group’s deadliest leather-clad ass kicker. Fellow traveler Jenny Wright lures Okie farm boy Adrian Pasdar into the group with a love bite, and he’s soon turning toward vampirism with a combination of frightened revulsion and relentless desire. With Joshua Miller (River’s Edge) as the youngest vampire, Near Dark is Bigelow’s masterpiece of low-budget ingenuity–a truck-stop thriller that begins well, gets better and better (aided by a fine Tangerine Dream score), and goes out in a blaze of glory. –Jeff Shannon

With growing concern for the colt’s survival, the family decides to employ a nomadic singing ritual to coax the mother into nurturing her young. They send the two eldest sons on a journey to the nearest village to fetch a musician for the “hoos ritual.” The story unfolds gently, sensitive to the rhythms of desert life while honoring its real-life actors. This modest yet magnificent film is the graduation project of film students Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni, extending beyond the tale of a camel and colt to explore the fragility and beauty of an ancient way of life. Summary of Movie
Nothing dates a movie quite as much as a roller-skating blonde in white shorts and a tube top. Midnight Madness opens with exactly that and quickly follows with a scene in which a student counselor reassures a romantically nervous freshman with the line, “Flynch, you could be a real Burt Reynolds, I know you could.” Ah, nostalgia. Made on the cusp of the ’80s, after Animal House but before Porky’s, Disney’s college comedy gained a considerable following, thanks to countless screenings on HBO during the Reagan administration. Like all the best cult movies, it’s awful, but compelling nonetheless. This is a film in which all the nerds look alike, the jocks have names such as Armpit, and you get to see fat twins shake their abundant disco booties. The plot revolves around an all-night scavenger hunt, with five teams of competing students racing around Los Angeles solving clues and getting into all sorts of amusing scrapes, including a visit to the Pabst brewery that will have you humming ancient advertising songs for days. David Naughton, who went on to star in An American Werewolf in London, is our hero, but the real fun comes from Stephen Furst as the mean and chubby rich kid and the legendary über-nerd Eddie Deezen as Wesley. Michael J. Fox makes his film debut as Naughton’s troubled but feisty kid brother, and the eagle-eyed viewer may even spot Paul Reubens in a tiny role. Being a Disney film that was released before Porky’s made shower scenes an integral part of campus comedies, this is a curiously innocent movie–just watch how long it takes the teams to decipher the clue, “Look between the two giant melons.” Nevertheless, Midnight Madness is 112 minutes of undemanding, cheesy fun for anyone who remembers the last days of disco. It makes Animal House look like Chekhov, but watch it with a group of friends, and perhaps a little Pabst Blue Ribbon, and you’ll have a hoot. –Simon Leake
