After establishing his signature style with such moody classics as Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, Jacques Tourneur returned to peak form with the first-rate supernatural thriller Curse of the Demon. It’s a horror-noir set in England, adapted from the M.R. James story “Casting the Runes” and built around the ominous notion that black arts–particularly the use of ancient runic symbols–can summon a deadly beast from hell. Dana Andrews is the stubborn American skeptic, determined to debunk a genteel occultist (Niall MacGinnis) whose evil powers are ultimately incontestable. The briefly seen demon may be cheesy by latter-day standards, but its nightmarish appearance–and Tourneur’s masterful use of subtle suggestion, threatening atmosphere, and eerie special effects–make Curse of the Demon one of the best horror films of the 1950s. This splendid DVD offers the longer British version Night of the Demon for film-buff comparison; it’s essentially the same film with a few extended scenes. Both are highly recommended. –Jeff Shannon

Summary of Movie
There are many enjoyable elements in the 1978 film version of Stephen Sondheim’s exquisite chamber musical A Little Night Music, based on Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night. First, Sondheim’s score (all based on meters of 3) is full of riches such as “Now/Later/Soon,” “Every Day a Little Death,” “It Would Have Been Wonderful,” and the famous “Send in the Clowns.” There’s even one reworking, of “The Glamorous Life,” that became something of a collector’s item for fans. Second, much of the cast is good, with original Broadway lead Len Cariou reprising his role as Frederik, the lawyer torn between his young wife, Anne (Lesley Anne-Down), and his former beau Desiree (Elizabeth Taylor). Others from the original Broadway company are Laurence Guittard (as pompous soldier Carl-Magnus) and Hermione Gingold (Mme. Armfeldt), and Diana Rigg adds a wonderful spice. Unfortunately Hal Prince couldn’t translate his successful stage direction to this clunky film, Taylor’s marquee value couldn’t help her sing her big number, “Send in the Clowns,” and a number of decisions–cutting songs, moving the setting from Sweden to Austria, eliminating the Greek chorus–just didn’t work. It’s worth seeing for the cast and for Sondheim’s music, but all in all, A Little Night Music is one of the most dismal Broadway-to-movie adaptations ever made. –David Horiuchi

The 2007 DVD is in a barely perceptible 1.66 widescreen, not enhanced for anamorphic televisions. Years earlier, the film was scheduled to be released by Image Entertainment but the print was judged too poor to release. Hen’s Tooth’s DVD has visible print damage throughout; you won’t use it to show off your home theater, but it is watchable, and the film’s reputation makes an expensive restoration unlikely. If you want A Little Night Music, you’re unlikely to get anything better than this any time soon, if ever. (Smalller quibble: only 12 chapter stops makes it hard to find the songs.) –David Horiuchi

Summary of Movie
The murderer isn’t the only one with a secret to hide in this television adaptation of Agatha Christie’s first novel. With the (often unwitting) help of his friend Arthur Hastings (Hugh Fraser), retired Belgian supersleuth Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) arranges the pieces of a puzzle, which include a broken coffee cup, spilled candle grease, untidy mantel ornaments, a fake beard, and a chief suspect who seems almost eager to be arrested.
Place all these clues on the grand estate of a murdered matriarch as World War I draws to a close, and you have not only a fine mystery but also a quiet elegy to a way of life that would soon fade away. What this adaptation sacrifices in the romantic intrigues that flesh out the novel, it makes up for in setting. As with all the Poirot episodes, there is a sumptuous attention to detail, from the furnishings of Styles Court to the white spats on Poirot’s shoes as he interrupts a military war game to give his fellow Belgians a lesson on local botany. Suchet’s characterization of Poirot here verges on caricature at times, but it is still difficult to resist his charms as he skillfully peels away the layers of deception to reveal the truth.
The DVD special features include biographies of David Suchet and Agatha Christie, challenging Poirot trivia questions and classic quotes, and a link to the official Agatha Christie Web site. –Larisa Lomacky Moore

“Have I got your attention, mister?” By the time you reach this line in Takashi Miike’s Imprint, the answer will be a resounding, horrified “Yes!” This much-rumored-about episode of Showtime’s Masters of Horror series became notorious as the first installment to be denied an airing. Now that the hour-long episode is out on DVD, it’s not difficult to see why the network balked (although on the other hand, if you have a series called Masters of Horror and you hire the outrageous Takashi Miike to helm a show, nobody should really be surprised). The story follows an American (Billy Drago) on a journey to a ghostly island bordello in Japan; he’s searching for a girl he lost years before. The prostitute he meets has stories to tell–and they abound in incest, abortion, murder, and one of the grisliest torture scenes ever produced for a mainstream outlet.
Anybody familiar with Miike’s films (Audition, Visitor Q) knows a couple of things about him: (1) there is no affront against civilized behavior he won’t put on film, and (2) he’s a heckuva filmmaker. Imprint confirms this, on both counts. The only weak spot is the English dialogue reading by the Japanese cast–and by Billy Drago, for that matter, although he does look very cool. The story may or may not make sense, but what stays with you are the pregnant, eye-filling images (cinematography by Toyomichi Kurita) and the truly shocking violence. It is really what the Masters of Horror series seems designed to do: give a director complete freedom to merge style with story. Take this to heart, oh ye of low nausea thresholds: Imprint will seriously mess you up. –Robert Horton
